This new puzzle, a folding mechanical puzzle, is another amazing mindbender by master puzzle inventor Ivan Moscovich. This puzzle, like many others Ivan has invented, explores areas that are interesting topically as well as from a puzzling perspective.
Topically, there is an enormous amount of interest today in molecular folding - how long chains of polymers or DNA, for instance, can fold to fit in small spaces. As these long chemical chains fold, different segments of the chain wind up next to each other, which, it turns out, impact the behavior or structural integrity of the chain in question. DNA models, for instance, are generally depicted in long chains. These chains fold, and through folding, different pieces of the DNA strand winds up being next to each other, which triggers the expression of that DNA strand differently then if it had been folded in a different way. This same mechanic has been observed in materials science as an underlying structural sub-strait which influences the properties and strengthen of many materials. Understanding the dynamic of molecular folding is difficult at best, especially in a virtual environment, and is at the cutting edge of research today.
